Dr Majid Khan PhD

Lecturer of Management and Sustainable Business

Doctoral Co-Supervisor
School of Management and Marketing

Majid's research examines how structural conditions produce and sustain labour exploitation, with a particular focus on bonded and forced labour in agrarian and industrial settings. Drawing on extended multi-sited fieldwork, his research engages questions of power, moral economy, and the everyday practices through which workers navigate coercive arrangements. He is also interested in sustainability communication and praxis, and in alternative forms of organising that challenge mainstream managerial assumptions.

Methodologically, Majid is committed to qualitative and ethnographic approaches. He has conducted in-depth interviews and sustained participant observation in contexts ranging from tobacco farming to brick kilns. This empirical grounding shapes a research programme that takes seriously both theoretical rigour and the lived realities of people in precarious work. Recent work explores the use of film and visual methods as research tools.

His work is published in journals including Work, Employment and Society, International Journal of Human Resource Management, Qualitative Research in Accounting and Management, Emerging Markets Review, Qualitative Research in Organizations and Management, and Human Resource Development International, among others.

Majid serves as Associate Editor at Human Resource Development International (HRDI) and the Journal of Sustainable Business. He is an active ad hoc reviewer for a number of leading international journals, including the Journal of Management Studies, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Journal of Business Ethics, the International Journal of Human Resource Management, and Personnel Review, among others.

Majid Khan is a Lecturer in Management and Sustainable Business at Massey University's School of Management. He holds a PhD in Management from Massey and previously held positions at NUST and Xiamen University. His research examines labour exploitation, bonded labour, and coercive work arrangements in various contexts, using qualitative and ethnographic methods. He is also interested in sustainability communication and alternative organising. Majid serves as Associate Editor at Human Resource Development International and the Journal of Sustainable Business.
