Institute of EducationDr. Emily Jones is a Speech-Language Therapist with over 25 years’ clinical experience, specialising in paediatric feeding and swallowing since 2001. She has held senior specialist and leadership roles in both the United Kingdom and Aotearoa New Zealand. In London, she coordinated the Paediatric Dysphagia Service for Southwark Primary Care Trust, and completed advanced practitioner training in paediatric dysphagia at Manchester Metropolitan University in 2003. After relocating to Auckland in 2006, Emily became Clinical Service Leader for Paediatric Speech-Language Therapy at Waitematā District Health Board, where she led services across neonatal, paediatric inpatient, rehabilitation, and community settings.
During her time at Waitematā, Emily contributed to the development of innovative, whānau-centred programmes, including the Food for Flourishing tube weaning programme (now based at Starship Children’s Hospital) and the Fun with Food outpatient group programme supporting children with complex feeding needs.
Emily joined Massey University in 2012 as a Clinical Educator and Lecturer in the Bachelor of Speech-Language Therapy (Honours) programme. She plays a key role in clinical education and interdisciplinary teaching, coordinating the ACTIVEating clinic in partnership with Nutrition and Dietetics. This clinic supports infants, children, and their whānau with a wide range of feeding challenges, while also providing authentic interprofessional learning opportunities for students. She also coordinates and teaches paediatric feeding and swallowing in the final year of the programme.
Emily completed her Master of Speech-Language Therapy in 2016, focusing on factors contributing to paediatric tube feeding dependency in New Zealand. Her doctoral research, completed in 2026 as part of the Health Research Council-funded First Foods NZ project, examined infant oral feeding skills, feeding behaviours, and choking prevalence in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Emily has contributed to national clinical and policy initiatives, including the Paediatric Society clinical network for tube feeding, and the Ministry of Health’s Infant and Toddler Feeding Guidelines Technical Advisory Group. She served as Expert Advisor for Paediatric Feeding and Swallowing for the New Zealand Speech-Language Therapists’ Association and was elected to the NZSTA Board in 2025, reflecting her ongoing commitment to advancing practice, education for her colleagues and improving outcomes for tamariki and their whānau.

INFANTS & FIRST FOODS- Emily specialises in paediatric feeding and swallowing wiith a particular interest in early feeding practices ( spoon feeding, baby led weaning, adpated baby led weaning and traditional early feeding methods).
FEEDING DIFFICULTIES: Emily coordinates a paediatric feeding clinic on campus and via telepractice to assist children and their families with picky eating, Paediatric Feeding Disorder & Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder.
